Downtown Los Angeles Food Tour

I recently went back to La La Land for a few days, and I would be lying if I said I didn't miss it a little bit. (maybe more) I mean concerts, store openings, and catching up with friends over rooftop bottles of Rose is tough, but I think if I had to, I could do it professionally. (anyone hiring?)  

 

While that was all fun, Sunday drew to an end and it was time to say our goodbyes. I had to figure out a way to get over the late night Sunday (ok fine I was in bed by 9), going back home soon, depression that was starting to sink in. But how? And then out of nowhere.. or maybe the growling of my stomach, came and idea. Food! I decided to plan a food (and drink) filled day in good old DTLA. After some very serious arm twisting, I was able to convince my three hungry gal pals to join me. 

 

I can't start any day with out a cup, (or 2, or 3) of coffee, so that was first on the agenda. We had a jammed packed day, and we needed all of our senses alert and ready for anything that came our way. Lucky for me, G&B coffee was staring me in the face the moment we walked into Grand Central Market. Before I knew what happened, my hand was gripping a delicious Almond Macadamia Latte.

 

 

Next up, the delicious Egg Slut.  (so many puns, too little time) Now since I had already had the privilege of trying their delicious breakfast sandwich, and the "Slut," this stop was more to share my love with one of my hungry gal pals. ... and let's just say.. she wasn't disappointed. 

 

 

What is in that jar you ask?  Well my friends.. that is the "Slut." While that may not sound good to some of you, it is a jar full of delicious creamy potato goodness, or as their menu declares, "Cage-free coddled egg on top of a smooth potato purée, poached in a glass jar, topped with gray salt and chives, served with slices of baguette." (OMG) If that description is not enough to sell you, one of my food-goers who is not particularly fond of eggs even enjoyed it!

 

And what is that handsome looking thing next to it? It's an unreal bacon, egg and cheese sandwich. Sounds pretty standard, and like something I could make at home, but honestly it was worth the shorter than usual wait. I really can't explain why it is so good, I suspect the bun, but it could also be fairy dust.

While my hungry friend and I were indulging in this starter ( o and a salted chocolate chip cookie), the other two were off grabbing a chicken taco from Tacos Tumbras a Tomas.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


 

 

That's a big frigen taco, and you're probably thinking, how can they possibly eat that much? Well my friends ... There were four of us, we managed.  This baby was fully packed with "medium" spicy chicken, along with cilantro, onions, and a generous amount of avocado, and did not disappoint.

 

While we could make an entire food tour out of Grand Central Market, we decided to widen our horizons and experience more of what the downtown food scene had to offer.  After all, you can't venture downtown and not stop at Cole's French Dip

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Now since they claim they are the originators of the French Dip, we had to take a bite. They offer multiple options to order from including turkey, beef, lamb, and pork. Our choice; pastrami. Since our waistlines were a huge priority, and we needed room for moscow mules, we ordered the Skinny Dip ( So LA) combo, half a sandwich with your choice of side. ( Fries.. duh)  The bread that makes up this sandwich acts like a sponge when soaking up the au jus, and we didn't hesitate to let our fries take a dip as well.

 

By this point we were feeling a tad full, (surprise) and thirsty, so we decided to hop into the Artisan House to have a cocktail (or three) while we let our stomachs do some much needed digesting. We all took advantage of the specialty cocktails which ranged from margaritas with a Tajin salted rim, to more Moscow Mules made with real ginger. Since this was a Monday afternoon, the bar was quiet, allowing for the bartender to modify the drinks a little more to our liking, only adding to the charm and overall pleasurable experience. 

 

*Note: While I lived in LA, I had a couple very enjoyable dinners here where my friends and I "Broke Bread, Shared Wine (lots) and Fed the soul". It is a great spot for groups, as most of the plates can be shared, allowing you to try more. ( I'm sensing a trend here) 

Before we moved on, we took a little walk through their market and grabbed a couple boxed waters, because it's very important to stay hydrated.  Then we took a photo of one of them on the grass.

 

Next up, the highly anticipated, KazuNori. I absolutely LOVE Sugarfish, and could not wait to try their hand roll bar! I was also VERY excited to have my hungry friend experience her first taste of sushi from the Sushi Nozawa group. We ordered and split the 4- hand roll option which consists of a toro roll, yellowtail roll, snapper roll, and blue crab roll.  

It was in her words "amazing, melt in your mouth delicious," and she forced me to share another toro roll with her. I wasn't mad.

 

Before we left, the friendly server let me know they were opening in New York. #BESTNEWSEVER.  Since then, they have opened, and I'm seriously contemplating getting on the subway right now and heading over there.. 

 

While the two of us were drooling all over the sushi bar, our other non sushi goer (crazy!) pals stumbled upon La Petit Paris. They began their experience here with the ‘Le Balsamique’ cocktail, prepared with vodka, fresh strawberries, balsamic vinegar and fresh lemon juice. My sister was nice enough to save me a sip, and although I was hesitant from her “You have to try this drink, it’s like drinking a salad,” text,  I obliged. It was surprisingly delightful and refreshing. (Yes, it did taste like drinking a salad, but in the best way possible.)

 

They also shared the appetizer of buratta & tomatoes glazed with a fresh pesto dressing. This time, I was not as lucky and was not saved a bite – only testifying to their claims of it being so good, they ate it in two minutes!

 

Because this time we were actually REALLY full, we decided it would be best to get some exercise and walk to Perch. This chic rooftop bar takes two elevators to get to and offers some of that LA vitamin D, crafty cocktails, and a swanky setting. 

 

 

The tour was almost over, but not before stopping by Bottega Louie. We shopped their famous display of macarons and desserts, and left with a beautifully ribbon wrapped box to go. After building macaron towers and snapping photos, these dainty little treats were consumed with a glass of prosecco while watching the sun sink behind the city.
